What is a friend?

OK, here is another thing I don't understand, and this I'm sure others would agree. Someone please define for me the definition of a friend? People always say "were friends" or "lets just be friends" or even "we are better off as friends". Well then what exactly is a friend? I always thought that a friend is someone who is there for you, talks to you, hangs out with you. If THAT is a friend, then I have MAYBE 2 at the most. The rest seem to just want to be acquaintances, which are those that just say "hi" and "bye" in passing or most don't want to have anything to do with you. That seems more like what everyone wants to be and just claim to be friends. So I ask again, what is a friend?

I was going to post almost the exact same question today. I am having an issue with someone who swears we are friends and i say we are just "chat buddies". I will keep watching and hoping someone can fill me in also. I feel that although we can talk about anything, i do not want an in-person friendship or to hang out with this person, so i dont feel that we are "friends". To me a friend is someone who is SUPPORTIVE of you no matter what, and not someone who will bad-mouth or question your life or decisions.

Its like last year when I lost my computer, I found out who my friends were because NOBODY tried to get a hold of me and like "How are you doing? Just making sure your still alive." That is what REALLY hurt me.

well I have lots of friends that we go weeks without talking but one of us always finds the time to send an email or call and say hey ... with all of us working different hours, having kids and many other commitments it is impossible to find the time we all use to for just the friend thing.

I can tell you too, that these friends are the kind that we tell each other everything, whether it is something we want to hear or not. We are the kind of friends that have been through many tough times together and have stepped up to that plate when needed.

Then I have many that I guess you would call acquaintences ... who I talk to when we run into each other or might see someone they know and ask how they are. But that doesn't make them any less a friend.
