Virtual Symposium- On Slut Shaming

Confession: By definition I am a SLUT. At least that's how society defines me.

My entire life, I was conditioned by others to believe that sex was a degrading and shameful act. When I was 5 years old and beginning to explore the wonders of my body, my mother, completely horrified, told me that if I masturbated, I would go to hell.

I was further indoctrinated that sex was something only slutty girls “have,” that good girls shouldn’t “give it away” before marriage; sex should be considered a "gift" therefore, a woman should be extremely selective toward who she “gives” it to.

The prevailing societal brainwashing dictates that sex “reduces” women, whereas men are simply innocent actors on the receiving end. By extension, our virginity or abstinence has a bearing on who we are as a person — as good people or bad people, as nice women or bad women. Women’s ability to be moral actors is wholly dependent on their sexuality. It is, honestly, insane.

The virgin-slut dichotomy is an insidious standard. The word "slut" is a label with contentious connotations placed upon women due to decades of religious stigmatization. According to the moral majority, women must extol modesty, while at the same time popular media suggests we must look sexually alluring and seductive to attract a mate. If a woman does not have sex after a date, she is labeled a prude. If she embraces her sexuality, she is referred to as a slut.

Society sets up a norm in which women are simply destined to fail.

Why are women who embrace their sexuality scorned, slut shamed, and ostracised?

Why does the mere thought of a woman having multiple sexual experiences with different partners intimidate people so much?

My theory is it has little to do with being a "slut" and more to do with others' insecurities about their own sexuality.

My hope is that society can collectively redefine the word slut. Rather than being viewed as a word of contempt toward others, the word, "slut" would someday define a person of courage- one who enjoys sex and embraces their sexual experiences.

I am a sexually liberated woman. I am a SLUT and proud to be one.

No thoughts on those who use it derogatorily , I won't be having sex with them, and they will be missing out.

Well written!! I hate all forms of labeling, and I agree that primarily it comes from people who are not comfortable with their own sexuality. Thank you for participating!!

"...At least, that's how society defines me..."

The question is, how do you define yourself? Do you consider yourself a slut, and if so, why... or why not?

Wishing you continued courage -- and thanks for participating in the symposium!

Good post.
Men have always liked to control women's bodies, behaviours and thoughts. I think slut shaming is part of this male domination!

Women have been blessed with the ability to give life and to most cultures that is the role of a woman, Their only purpose is for breeding. For a woman to accept the seed of multiple donors is what culture dictates to be wrong. Of course my thought is, If a woman's not suppose to enjoy sex, then why does she have the ability to have multiple orgasms?

My poor ego just can't handle comparisons! All my partners tell me I'm the best, though, so no worries.

With me, “slut” is a term of endearment and refers to a lady that likes sex, is good at it, and is not shy about admitting both points. I have several friends that are wonderful sluts.

There were times when being gay was a crime - people would be jailed. And "witches" burned.
Then it was a time when gays were considered as loonies, women with carnal desire as hysterical ...
The sex revolution made that women could have pleasure without shame. The gay prides lead to coming outs.
Yet it's not all over - anything that's not shaped in the couple norm is still seen as abnormal.
Let's have hope in the future, another step will be made and multiple partners considerd as ... normal.
Let's hope, dear slut my sister.

You've written a very good post. I think you have it exactly right. From what we know about ancient cultures, they celebrated and were in awe of woman's powerful sexuality. I think you describe it correctly as male insecurity with that powerful and mysterious female sexuality, and that it's become a manner of control over that power through repression and suppression.
Really very well said.

You have to wonder why us humans are so susceptible to brainwashing.

It used to be religion but these days the media is the new religion that dictates to us how we live our lives and what we eat or drink.

In fact even the thing we call "patriotism" is nothing more than blind obedience of those ruthless bastards who manage to fight their way to becoming our "leaders".

But I digress.

What I really wanted to say was that it would be bloody interesting to run an honest poll among the blokes here to determine if given the choice we would prefer to spend the night with a slut or a virgin.

The best part is how we are able to extol modesty AND be a slut at the same time.

I feel ya, the way religion ties morality to a natural function is off to me and it just messes with peoples heads and its horrifying. Good read and thought provoking.

Please, just call me diggy.

"Why does the mere thought of a woman having multiple sexual experiences with different partners intimidate people so much?"

Patriarchy. Patriarchy. Patriarchy.
The common [mis]perception is that a woman "gives" herself. She isn't "having", they are having her. That's how we are perceived. We aren't considered free agents, doers, acting in our own right and for our own reasons.

Slut is an ugly sounding word, starting with paired consonants, pivoting on an awkward vowel, and ending on a hard consonant. If you wish to identify yourself with the concept then I would prefer a more alluring word, befitting your personality.

I've made love with both. The self-proclaimed slut was much more fun.

According to Sex at Dawn, early hunter-gatherers had no concept of ownership and shared fully within the clan. Therefore, women are multi-orgasmic and vocal to attract the lads, who get their shot of oxytocin when they come, roll off, and go to sleep to make room for their friends.

I rather like the word coquette for you. While it could be pronounced harshly, its very Frenchness compels me to pronounce it in a lilting, mischievous manner.

No one shames a coquette. I may linger with a coquette. I may delight and distract a coquette. I may even make a total buffoon of myself attempting to charm a coquette. But in your presence, my dear, shaming would be the furthest thing from my mind.
