Violated

We live in a society where innocent victims are preyed upon by unscrupulous individuals looking to illegally drain money from accounts without so much as a thought about what damage this may inflict upon the victim.

Today I was THAT victim.

Normally I am very diligent about staying on top of my finances. My bank has online banking and I usually verify my account history daily. Yesterday, I got busy and did not.

Today I discovered an unauthorized purchase was made to my bank account using my Visa debit card. While the charge was not over $100, it required a lot of legwork to suspend the card (still in my possession), sign a fraud affidavit to submit to Visa for reimbursement, and obtain a new card.

I am fortunate that I caught the charge. Who knows how much money the hacker would have drained from my account if I hadn't been so diligent.

Have you ever felt violated this way? How did you deal with it?

A few years ago when reconciling my debit card account, I noticed some strange charges from a company that dealt with prisons and inmates. Not having any one I know incarcerated, I called them to find out what the charges were for. Turns out someone had hacked my card, and was having goody baskets delivered to inmates at several federal penitentiaries. Candy, treats, and even new pairs of underwear, all on my dime! The bank reversed all the charges, and notified the prisons.
Of course, I had to cancel my card and wait for another one to be reissued, which took a week.
You can't make this stuff up........

On my trip in San Fran, someone tried to withdraw $500 from my checking account. It was blocked, but then they withdrew $200 back to back. The bank was suspicious, and notified me. I told them I made a withdrawal of $40, but not the others. It took a few weeks after investigating, to reimburse me the money.

Thoughts from the Garden...

It was good that you were able to get the money reimbursed.

That really sux. Hasn't happened to me so far. I've been trimming down my online accounts and eliminating as much info as doable. It is getting way too easy for the info to be stolen and abused.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

Two years ago charges for $587 appeared on my gas card. Even with ridiculously high gas prices in California, my tank can't hold more than $60 worth of gasoline. And that when it's empty, which I never allow.

I had to go through the same thing you had. It took 2 weeks to straighten everything out. Charges were reversed and I got a new card. But, as you, I felt violated.

Never been got that way, I keep a close eye on mine and the bank will take care of it, but if they did get my passwords I'd be screwed.

Visa is going to refund the amount next week.

There's my silver lining! If you have nothing, they have nothing to steal!

I've not been a victim but I recently left my debit card in an ATM after withdrawing money. (I'd forgotten to take the card out!) Thankfully, the card was handed into customer service desk at the supermarket by a very trustworthy individual.
