THEY THINK IT'S ALL OVER, IT IS NOW!

Chris Froome, Romain Bardet and Rigoberto Uran (plus Darwin Atapuma on the right):

Le Tour de France is over and my summer has effectively ended! I just don’t know what I’m going to do now. I guess I’ll have to wait for the next Grand Tour, la Vuelta a España next month. That’s a long wait for me!

This year’s edition of le Tour de France was one of the best for many years. There were lots of incidents - crashes, skulduggery and a close finish. Team Sky’s Chris Froome won the Tour by just under a minute from Rigoberto Uran and Romain Bardet. This was Chris Froome’s fourth Tour victory, one more and he becomes one of the all-time greats of le Tour de France - not bad for a Kenyan-born, South African-educated, French-living British citizen!

Warren Barguil won the polka dot jersey for being the best climber and Michael Matthews won the green jersey for being the best sprinter. Warren Barguil was brilliant in animating the Tour. Michael Matthews was lucky because many top sprinters, such as Mark Cavendish, Peter Sagan and Marcel Kittel, didn’t finish the Tour for one reason or another.

Simon Yates won the white jersey for being the best young rider; his twin brother Adam Yates won it last year. They race for the same team but the team doesn’t allow them to race together yet!

Team Sky were dominant if not a little controlling and a bit boring; Mikel Landa and Michal Kwiatkowski were brilliant as domestiques in getting Chris Froome to Paris. Strangely Team Sky had the fastest rider, Chris Froome, and the slowest rider, Luke Rowe, to Paris. While Chris Froome got le maillot jeune, Luke Rowe got la lanterne rouge!

But for me the two best teams were the French team, AGR2 la Mondiale, and the Dutch team, Team Sunweb. AGR2 la Mondiale were great in trying to get the French rider Romain Bardet to the yellow jersey - the French are coming next year! Team Sunweb won two jerseys, the best climber’s jersey for Warren Barguil and the best sprinter’s jersey for Michael Matthews - the Dutch have come!

The most disappointing teams were the top-budget teams, the American Team BMC and Spanish Movistar Team. Team BMC at least had the excuse that its leader, Richie Porte, crashed out of the Tour quite early on but Movistar Team had no excuses; Movistar did nothing this year!

My girlfriend claimed that cycling isn’t a proper sport; as I spluttered I showed her a photograph of a Tour de France’s legs to show her the pain, sacrifice and glory of the sport of road cycling - see inside for the photo.

What does la Tour de France mean to you?

See you all in France next year!

198 riders started the Tour but only 167 riders finished it.
Below is a photograph af Pawel Poljanski's legs after about three-quarters into the Tour. This is normal!

To me La Tour means drugs, institutionalised drugs in sports, sorry, the legs are just an indication of how far the riders will go........

I know you love it, so I mean it when I say sorry.

Bonjour Spunky

Hello Spunky
The summer is not over, but the end of the tour de France always makes me think that we go towards the winters.
Congratulations to Chris Froome, but next year will be more difficult because if I understood his teammate Mikel Landa should be in another team.
Finally it's another story that I hope to see and maybe a Frenchman will eventually win
Long live the tour of France

I'm sorry Spunky but the Tour de France doesn't mean much to me....I'm more intersted in Rugby.

I'm sorry but I agree with McLinda - the sport is far too riddled with drugs to ever be believable.

I really wanted to believe in Wiggo, but even his "level playing field" seems dodgy to me.

I am ashamed to say....it did not mean much. It was not covered very well in the U.S.

I used to watch a lot more cycling on TV than I do now. Maybe it's because I've stopped cycling myself (only recreational).

You'll have to wait until next July for the next Tour de France, though there is La Vuelta in Spain this month!

I can understand your cynicism towards le Tour de France. Though there's much to be done, cycling is gradually getting on top of its drugs problem. Times are much slower now that they were during the Lance Armstrong years!

There's nothing wrong with the cyclist's legs; that's what happens on the Tour. Because cyclists have little fat their veins show up more after days of physical exertion.
Philippe Gilbert is arguing with the dog owners for not keeping control of their dog, which led him to fall from his bike.
El Diablo is a dedicated fan of le Tour; he's there every year!

Rumour has it that Mikel Landa is moving to Movistar.
I think either Romain Bardet or Warren Barguil may win next year's Tour - they just need to improve their time-trialling this winter.

Rugby is soon to start again. I like international rugby but I'm not so keen on club rugby - there's only so many scrums, rucks and mauls I can handle in what is quite an attritional game!

Bradley Wiggins, and Team Sky, while not cheating, played the rules to win, though investigations still continue into that package.
Times are going down in the Tour which, at least to me, suggests drugs are less prevalent in professional road cycling.

Professional road cycling is probably one of the few sports that the US doesn't excel in - it's a very European thing. However, the American team BMC are a big budget outfit and, if they do well, maybe le Tour will become big once again after the disgraced Lance Armstrong years.

I am so jealous that you had a Chopper; I had to make do with a racer with a very uncomfortable saddle!
