THE NOT-SO-MIGHTY WHITES  The Mighty Whites are my football team, Leeds United, except they’re not-so-mighty nowadays. Leeds United play in an all-white strip; when they changed their strip to white they were hoping the stardust of the magical Real Madrid would rub off onto them. It did! From the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s, Leeds United, managed by Don Revie and captained by Billy Bremner, were arguably the best football team in England and maybe the world. They were the team to beat and the team to hate. Since this heyday Leeds United have had a couple of flourishes: in the 1991/1992 season they won the Division One title under Howard Wilkinson, and in the 2001/2002 season they reached the UEFA Champions League semi final under David O’Leary. But since these flourishes, Leeds United have been languishing in the lower leagues over the last decade, though now they are only one promotion away from a rightful return to the top division. The reason for their decline is after their Champions League exploits they spent way too much money on players and nearly went bust. In football circles this sort of decline is known as 'doing a Leeds'! Relegation after relegation followed, exacerbated by dodgy owners and a managerial merry-go-round. My main source of joy from supporting Leeds United now is trying to persuade my girlfriend’s five year-old grandson to support them. My campaign didn’t start well. He started to support Nottingham Forest, his home team and his Dad’s team. He then supported Derby County, rivals to Nottingham Forest, after he was taken to Derby for a day out. He also went to Spain for a week's holiday and came back a Barcelona supporter! And every time he saw my girlfriend’s two Arsenal-supporting sons he then supported the boring Arsenal. It was time to re-think my tactics. I decided to invest in a junior Leeds United kit as a Xmas present to him. This tactic seemed to work well. He wore the kit to bed and consistently said he supported Leeds United. And he even punched the air every time Leeds United won; I never told him when they lost a game! However, I still had to be on guard for any pernicious influences that may get him to switch football teams. I was so desperate that I even said that Chris Froome’s yellow jersey was proof that Leeds United had won le Tour de France - Leeds United’s away kit is yellow! My desperate tactic seemed to work as he went round telling people that Leeds United had won the Tour de France! But two weeks ago, one of my girlfriend’s sons bought him a pair of football boots on condition that he supports Arsenal. He now sleeps in an Arsenal kit and seems to take great pleasure in telling me that he’s now an Arsenal fan. I don’t have long left to get him to support the right football team because at school he will be surrounded by Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur fans and, because my football team can't match the glory of these top teams at the moment, my influence will significantly wane. As the last roll of the dice, I’ve decided to buy him a package where he can be a mascot for a Leeds United game. He will get to meet the players, walk out with the team at the start of the game and be given loads of club souvenirs. I think this may work but I must choose a game where Leeds United are likely to win. I think the home game against Burton Albion on the 9th of September may be just the game! It’s expensive supporting a football team. But it’s Super Leeds! What sporting teams do you follow? If I your blog, will you support Leeds United? Below are some of my favourite Leeds United players over the years; you’ll be able to tell that the years are not the recent years! I wanted to show a photo of my favourite player, Allan 'Sniffer' Clarke, but there are no good ones to be found. Nor could I find decent photos of Terry Cooper and Tony Currie. My other sporting teams are Montrose; they're my Scottosh football team I support because Montrose were my best Subbuteo team. I also follow Shresbury Town because I'm a Shropshire lad! I also follow Nottingham Panthers in ice hockey and Team Sky in road cycling. With all this support, I'm likely to be happy with one of my teams in any given week!

Those were the Glory Days, the fall of Leeds UFC has been sad to watch! However my team Wrexham have suffered worse, from a high point of 2nd in the old 2nd Division and European Nights against the likes of Roma and Anderlecht. Slipping down the leagues, bought by a crook who was given the ground by the brewery that owned it! Then sold the ground to one of his own companies, to charge the club rent, and let the club go bankrupt! He had hoped to get the club shut down, in order to develop the land! Fortunately the receiver saw through his plans and the club managed to get the ground back, realising he wasn't going to be able to develop the ground he sold the club to a Fans Syndicate. However, crippling debts and the loss of 10 points led to eventual relegation out of the Football league. So please don't bemoan the state of the "Damned United" to me, I have my own troubles  Visit my Blog Older but no Wiser and find out more

I support Manchester United, the Irish & Scottish Rugby teams....though if they are playing each other I am torn. It appears that bribery and corruption is still a good method to get your way with children.  Finally...I met Jack Charlton years ago. ~~Anais Nin~~

I found this post to be interesting in many ways. First of all what you are talking about is soccer over here so I had to adjust my mental parallels and get off our football. I have two friends in Hudson Mass. who travel over to the UK to support Arsenal. Then the owner of a well-established craft beer brewing company ( Shipyard) goes to Ri-Ra and other pubs during this season and is totally immersed in the games and standings. I do not know what team he's behind. I also found it amusing that the title of your post relates to two other things today. The White Clash that's happening in our deep south and the convergence on HNW White Loved this!!!  (Virtual Symposium Group) use Virtual Symposium Group

1. England in anything except for Rugby Union, Scotland in anything, which isn't very much. Probably England Cricket team is my favourite all time team ever, I've followed and supported since my late teens, for some odd reason. Oh aye, and the Scottish Mens and Ladies Curling teams are always good too! 2. Nope, I am incorruptible........ahem........unimpeachable......... Leeds went doonhill when yiz got rid ay the jocks, we were the backbone of the club I tell ye!! They're still one of my fave English footie teams........

I like both football and ice hockey. My ice hockey team, Nottingham Panthers, won a European Cup last season, the first time ever a British team has won such a trophy. This season Panthers are in the elite Europpean Champions Hockey League, and despite being the lowest ranking team, we're top of our group after fotr games. Last night we beat SC Bern, one of the best European teams.
