Memories
Memories of Yesterday and to-days Happiness Part 1.
She took the cup of tea offered By the young lady, She noted the fine bone china, The crystal milk jug and sugar pot, The tiny delicate cucumber And watercress sandwiches Their crust removed Delicate but rich little cakes She smiled
She closed her eyes and found She back, back where it all began She and Charles both desperately Wanted , she knew it would Be difficult maybe even impossible Because of her medical history, That and being born what was Then known as an infantile twin Little Elizabeth had lost her fight After 6 days of struggling to breath Her tiny eyes closed.
They sat before this new doctor With hope in their eyes I am sorry Mr. and Mrs. Eastwinds I have thoroughly gone over Both your tests, Mrs. Eastwinds I am very sorry but you are barren.
The tears rolled down my face and Became hard racking sobs shaking My whole body. Oh my sweet Etty, we knew it might Be so..
But Charles I so wanted to give you a Hush, now dry your eyes, I married you, Not a baby making machine. Well now let us go and have a nice cuppa That will cheer you up.
She often said that day in the office Of the specialist, she felt Elizabeth She felt her whisper in her ear That all would be well, and she had Been sent to be her angelher Guardian angel.
Etty threw herself into doing. They were not wealthy, and Charles Was newly released from the Army Carrying a certificate stating Medical discharge Heart and Lung Problems
Charles was such a gentle man But he had signed as thousands Of young Australians had To serve their nation He had been sent to Singleton to train
He had spent time in Western Australia And at dinner parties later in life Delighted in telling how they made a Fortune off Septic Tanks, selling them Cases of Horehound beer At three times the going rate. How his best mates, Jacko, and Ernie Had killed themselves laughing When the Yanks proceeded To get dead drunk on it
Why had they laughed why everyone Knew it was a soft drink like ginger beer Well everyone except the Yanks He put his share into the bank, it was Quite a substantial amount in the 40s
Charles next deployment was to Darwin He was there when the Japanese bombed The city. He was there helping the civilians Trying to calm their fears that they Were about to be invaded by the Japanese
Charles would tell, how his bazillion Were given new orders, They took the long hot dusty trip In army trucks back to Sydney. They boarded the troop ship, Packed in like sardines most choosing To kip out on deck, with hundreds Lining the Heads of Sydney harbor, the Ship sailed out to the sound of bagpipes, Songs, cheering and signs written Out wishing them a safe and speedy Return, he also remembered There was not cloud in the sky
They had been underway for some time In International waters and where only a Few days earlier another troop ship had been Torpedoed and all sailors, Soldiers and the nurses on board Had lost their lives
A hissing and a rattle and then they were Listening as the news the War in the Pacific was over. The boat was turning around And heading back to Sydney Back to their loved ones A great cheer and a shout went up Happiness, wonder, and relief Surging through them.. They had survived, they were unhurt They were going home..
Within two hours of landing At Darling Point Sydney Harbor Charles was knocking on Ettys door He was so nervous, He asked to see her father, His face was white He had rehearsed his speech Over and over till it was word perfect
He found himself stumbling and Stammering, he knew he was not Making sense, he could see the Amusement his Mr. Kenyas eyes
Sit down Charles there is something I I think you need to know before I give Or with hold my blessing
Charles it is highly probable that Etty Will be unable to bear you She is not a real woman Charles.
Bernard often told us of that day How Charles had clenched his fists, His eyes blazing, and through clenched Teeth trying to contain his anger Mr. Kennya in my eyes etty is perfect I wish to spend the rest of my life with Her. Bernard said that was one of three times He ever saw Charles blazing with anger
Mrs Eastwind, may I refill your tea Mrs. Eastwind? She opened her and smiled at the Young girl who had brought her back To the present
As her cup was being refilled Isabella came before her Whirled around, uncertainty Written on her face Turning to Look at Etty A slight shake of the head Isabella was gone As quickly as she had appeared
End part one
