I love your blog.
With your rural postings and Furbal's urban postings, I feel quite an expert on American flora!

I was sneaking down through the brush to find frogs when I found that deadfall, and I couldn't resist the beautiful grain on the stump.

Thank you honey! The trails aren't very well marked in the Preserve, but the scouts did nail up these triangles now and then. I take a lot of photos of them but don't very often post them. I couldn't resist this one, the way the dogwood overgrew the marker. In a very short time Al Sabo will be shining with dogwood flowers. It's breathtaking in springtime.

Thanks Spunky. I think Furbal's blog is like visiting a retreat. In the middle of the city he finds such lovely things to focus on. It reminds you that whatever impediments we put in front of it, life will find a way.

You have to visit some day and hike with us!

Spring starts out slowly here. We've got a head start on last spring so far, but we could still get more snow. I saw the first sandhill cranes last year on the 21st of March, I think, and we had snow on the ground.

Gracie would like Ollie a lot more if he'd keep all four paws on the ground- she likes to play, but she's not that kind of girl.

This place is magnificent all year round. In summer you can almost hear it breathing and drinking.

I love nature absorbing the man made sign.
I hate seeing people nail stuff to trees. This is a dogwood, so it grows slowly anyway. But it's incredibly hard and tough, and it responds to abrasion by getting even smoother and slicker. Dogwood used to be used for spindles in textile factories for just that reason. The tree was just eating this trail marker from all sides- there's poetry and philosophy in that.

I love how the tree is swallowing those markers. .. I see them do that here with fences. .. And there's one down the street that was cut from a wire that it grew around. There's still a little piece hanging from the wire.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

The Preserve is reclaimed farmland, for a pristine watershed. Most of it is reforested, and it's left natural, except for trail clearing. So you see a lot of this- nature taking control again. The city's wellheads are in the Preserve, and they keep their roadway clear, and maintain the wellheads. There are a couple of stairways and some trail posts. A gas pipeline runs through the Preserve too. Other than that, the place is all "Let It Be". And it's wonderful!

I do admire you guys and how faithful you are to hiking and getting out all winter long. I'm just a wimp here in New Jersey and kinda lazy I guess.
We've been lazy too, this year. Some days we only walked a couple of miles. When we get beautiful winter storms it's easy to get motivated to hike. It's harder when it's drab and damp and dismal. But we HAVE to do this. I hope I can manage to drag my ass out there for many years to come. I feel alive there.

I LOVE your new profile photo!

I miss it when I take a day off. There are days it's hard to get off my ass and go, but Gracie is just crestfallen when we don't, and she always makes it worthwhile. There is joy in her whole body out in the forest, and it's contagious. We all feel more alive there.
