The internationalist - build bridges, don't put up walls

Hi everyone, it will shock you to know this won't be a bright and breezy blog full of dick pics and tales of conquests the atmosphere is a bit tense here in Merry Old Englande in the lead up to the EU referendum result. I won't go on too much about my stance on the EU, I'd simply like to say that the best way to support your country is to live there, pay your taxes and buy as many goods and services made within your own borders as possible. Also, unfortunately in this referendum, immigration has flared up as a major issue - for the record, if it wasn't for immigration I'd have died in February 1996 - I had an operation that went badly wrong - turned out I had a very rare allergy to the anaesthetic, only 1 in 250,000 people have it, but the anaesthetist spotted it - he was born, brought up, educated and trained in Hong Kong - a massive free gift to the UK. If he hadn't spotted it and administered the antidote I'd have been dead at 22. I was brought up to be grateful to the people that help you in life so I'll never forget what he did for me.

Tech trends mean we live in a more interconnected world than ever and A F F embodies this being a global website. You can talk to people all over the world and gain major insights into their lives, even if you don't ever meet them. I've known plenty over the years in The USA, Canada, Australia, and the parts of Europe where they speak better English than British people do (Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Holland). Talking to people in other countries can be fascinating - attitudes and viewpoints are different - I've found a lot of Americans to be really upbeat and energetic people compared to British - we seem to be worn down by constant wind and rain. Culture clashes occur too, however, I remember being horrified when a mum in San Francisco sent me a video clip of her 9 year old shooting a machine gun at a rifle range. She told me she was training her to use guns because where she lived had one of the highest rates of gun crime in the whole of the US. I told her maybe it was a good idea not to use guns and move somewhere where there was less shooting.

Even though it makes me really unpopular, I am a political animal at heart, and I see political trends in the way people behave on here. I notice in the US that Donald Trump has gone all the way to securing the Republican nomination. On the face of it this is pretty extraordinary considering he's a massive nutjob and a fundamental failure as a business man (it's been pointed out if I'd have put all his inheritance in the bank and lived off the interest, he'd be worth more than he is now). Trump has been deliberately controversial and abrasive and this has played well with certain voters. This I'm not surprised by, whenever I'm in the chat rooms here, Americans from the South queue up to berate people for speaking in Spanish - it doesn't matter if they're in Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela or Panama, apparently they should all be speaking English. This would seem to reflect a large population of people ill at ease with themselves and have trouble dealing with people from other places, other cultures, have different languages. They don't seem to get the 'World Wide' bit of the World Wide Web - this is a rather large oversight, yes I see if you want a meet tonight it's pointless talking to someone 6,000 miles away but if you're interested in locals only, how about you just go to bars, clubs and houseparties? Anyway I hope you enjoy the international aspect of the website, I certainly think it's progress we can talk filth to people all over the world now

Apparently a load of people voted 'Leave' to 'kick the establishment' - could they be more stupid? There was an establishment before the EU and there will be one afterwards, if you want to break up the establishment you should ban Independent fee paying schools, which are nothing to do with the EU.

Britons just made it harder to travel to the EU, work in the EU, export goods & services to the EU - watch out for the first ever self-inflicted recession on the working class in a few months time . . .
