What is Patriotism?

Is it looking the other way when your government is tapping your telephone conversations?

Does it really matter if it is done in the name of collecting information from "suspected" terrorists?

Should it make a difference whether the people being spied on are citizens or not?

When someone, be it your government, or another, or some criminal is listening in through your television or your cell phone or your cars user interface system is it right? Is it acceptable in the name of catching those terrorists?

What about when the ability is abused by over zealous law enforcement or politically or personally motivated individuals or organizations?

What about when these abilities are being used by criminals to take advantage of you in some way?

Why do some people like to call it unpatriotic when someone exposes a spying apparatus?

What would McCain or any of the others be saying if it was the Russian spy network that had been tagged with this abuse?

Is it really patriotic to allow your government to develop and use spy networks that invade your privacy?

Should we expect a right to privacy in today's world?

One thing is certain power that can be abused will be abused, it is just a matter of time.

the rules change to suit who is in power. do I think we deserve privacy, yes. do I think we will get privacy, no. go off the grid if you want any semblance of privacy.
But with drones and satellites with cameras that can take a very detailed picture of a gnats ass from thousands of miles away off the grid really isn't out of sight.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

So true. Privacy seems to be becoming extinct.

I don't realistically expect privacy in today's world in fact I live with the understanding that we can be spied upon very easily and if you are a criminal or terrorist and you use any electronic devices for communicating or have them in your presence when communicating then you are a fool. I do think it is wrong to spy on people without good reason to be doing so and I do believe these powers to do so are likely to be abused.

What I find particularly offensive is when politicians put the patriotic stamp on the issue. If you are going to spy and get caught don't whine and say how this exposure is going to put us behind... etc.

Actually even that won't work as there are many other ways to collect conversations but it is a start. They've had laser and or infrared devices that could listen into conversations in rooms by the vibrations of the windows for decades. That's not to mention the various means of electromagnet listening. But it is so much easier and cheaper to do your spying via the internet using the persons own equipment.

As far as the spying on US goes, that doesn't seem to bother me too much.
They can't find out if someone is a bad person ( danger to our country ) until they actually DO something, otherwise. . And the Gov't not doing it won't stop criminals from doing it anyway, but *might* lead to better ways to make all this spying harder.

The manufacturers are saying they are looking into fixing the weaknesses but there will always be other ways to get around the new patches it seems. I do realize the "necessity" of spying on people in order to collect the evidence of criminal or terroristic activity but I really find it insulting to stick the patriotic label on these situations as though that makes it acceptable.

While I get being upset about the idea of the government taken liberties and spying on it's people, I also don't really care to much. If the CIA wants to spy on me through my tv they are are going to be very bored of watching a very stoned me play video games and snack on junk food...

I hear you but what about when the police start using the technology to round up those people who smoke weed. Sessions is now the attorney general of the country with a "Law and Order" president in charge. They are hiring more police and those police are going to have to have something to do to justify their existence...

“I don't think America is going to be a better place when people of all ages, and particularly young people, are smoking pot,” Sessions said to ..

"We're seeing real violence around that," Sessions said. "Experts are telling me there's more violence around marijuana than one would think and there's big money involved."

Lots of questions so I'll just grab a few.

What would McCain or any of the others be saying if it was the Russian spy network that had been tagged with this abuse? Not sure what your reference to McCain is about.

Is it really patriotic to allow your government to develop and use spy networks that invade your privacy? This has nothing to do with patriotism. Spying is a fact of life on the planet. The govt should have legitimate reason to spy on people. If this is re the the recent Wikileaks CIA thing, the CIA is (or at least was) barred from spying domestically.

Should we expect a right to privacy in today's world? Given how the world is that is an unrealistic expectation. But, from our own govt, we should have aright to privacy if we are not plotting against the people of our country.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

I'm not certain in this case but I thought I saw him saying something about the effect of the exposure of this method of collecting information and relating it to patriotism. I'm sure I've seen him saying such things about similar situations. I do like McCain even though he is a bit too republican at times.

The second item you picked was me commenting on the patriot act crap that in essence has been used and abused by our government to spy on our people as well as foreigners. Patriotism has been cited by numerous republicans especially in relation to this issue of invasion of privacy. The government at various levels has always abused it's power and to think it has or will stop is a dream.

Privacy an unrealistic expectation in today's world? It is unrealistic in that there is profit to be made by collecting information on people, which I don't care for unless it is totally disconnected from any identifing information. But that doesn't mean it should be acceptable for governments or internet agents to be actually listening in to private conversations and such whether the person being listened to is a citizen or not (IM. I don't care for big brother or others having the capability to do these things. But that is the problem with technology, the more complicated it is the weaker the defenses or the more pathways to gain access. The other problem is once it is there it can be used and exploited by others which is going to happen whether the capability is being developed by the CIA or trumps “somebody sitting on their bed who weighs 400 pounds.”

The constitution is a means to an end not an end itself.

Please don't let me be misunderstood.

it depends on the circumstances, non should be done lightly, but all within the Constitution that is to protect us. and patriotism should be protecting and defending hat constitution, not just national borders.

tickles4us replies on 3/10/2017 4:51 pm:
It certainly shouldn't be done to citizens of this country as the constitution is supposedly protecting citizens from said invasions of privacy. I do understand the need to spy on criminals or terrorists though.
