when it happens to you
when it happens to you the director of services for my agency became homeless last week. her house burned down. luckily, no one was hurt and both families made it out of the building safely. let me tell you about K. she was a street addict and homeless many years ago. she got clean. she has 4 , put herself through college, graduated with honors, started working at the shelter as direct care, became a case manager, promoted to a program director and is now our director of services. she works harder than anyone i've ever met. her and our guests are the reasons. the shelter guests, the people living at our vets housing, the folks working for us and for almost every agency in our City have rallied to help. Our warehouse is filled with donations. Walmart brought the in to shop for clothes. folks she'd helped over 15 years ago showed up with donations. when you think something you do didn't make a difference. or when you give without expecting anything in return...people remember. the homeless residents raised nearly 67.00 for her. that means some of them went without smokes. that's huge. the schools where the go? clothes and gift cards and the principal took her shopping personally. that's kindness. agencies where she'd done work rushed to find beds and furniture and the local housing authority covered her security and first month's rent. that's collegial support and respect i felt such blinding joy that she should know the love of so many people. i was so proud for her that her should know that about her. and for us to be able to do the work that we do for so many for one of our own. nods. yes...it brought it all home. the other family in the house was cared for as well. within a week, they will both be housed and all the furniture and appliances they need will be in place. we work fast. we do our jobs well. this was really scary...but it made it so real to all of us. and i think that's a good thing. You cannot conceive the many without the one. |

Even though it's not construed as 'healthy' by popular opinion, my life's meaning is tied up in my work these days. It would be gratifying if people I'd helped rallied to help me in my time of need.

Despite everything, I believe that people are really good at heart. Anne Frank OMG, how terrible for your director. Asa followup to the that, this is the reason I try to beat renters insurance into the head of everyone I know. It's relatively inexpensive, you can get a policy for $150-$200 per year and even if you have modest means you can get a bare bones policy for less. I hope she's able to get back on her feet quickly and smoothly.

I casually speak of Karma, and how it works, either slowly or quickly, but it works. Your story, WE, is an example of slow-acting KARMA kicking into high-gear in response. Her & your whole teams' good works came back to good fruition in this case. You do the same, though, for anyone, because that is who you (the generic you, your team and agency) are. No matter how you describe this, karma, agency effeciency, or good human nature, I'm gladdened by your story. Chas

What goes around, really does come around. What a blessing that everyone got to practice what they preach and that your co-worker and her family are safe.

And it's a sobering reminder that even people with jobs, who are making ends meet, can suddenly be on the street. As always, bless you for all you that you do.

WE, your posts quite often bring tears to my eyes as this one did. It gladdens my heart to hear of such gratitude and humanity. I can imagine how difficult it was for the shelter residents to raise $67, indeed a huge sum for those who themselves have nothing but hope to live on. You always offer inspiration and hope. All I can say is thank you to you and everyone who paid it forward, or backward, as it may be.

Wonderful, uplifting story! I appreciate reading it today. I've never read your blog before. I saw your prfile picture on the most viewed list and couldn't make out exactly what the picture was of. So, I clicked it, hoping to enlarge it, and was sent to your blog instead. I am so glad that I was. I'm certain that your friend and her family will be fine, as this out pouring of help shows how much they are loved. "Don't count the days, make the days count"
