Ideas for community building?

After a month focusing on bugs, we are starting
to plan out the next few months of development
and would love to get your ideas on things you'd
like to see that could help foster more interaction
on this site.

I'll start with a few ideas that we're prioritizing
to get your feedback as well as spur discussion of
other ideas. Let's focus this thread on things to
improve groups, blogs, and advice lines.

- add albums to groups (we are almost done with this feature)

- list new and recently visited members in a group

- enable blog owners and group moderators to limit posters to people in their friends list

- enable group moderators to specify how many days a post is "stuck" to the top of the list

Comments? Others?

Yes please go back to the old way of posting things on the advice lines where posts were left in the order they occured not by the latest response on it. The volume of responses on the AL is much greater than groups and people tend to post on what is on top so things get stuck there for days. Its hard to pull out the new questions and because of that many get ignored which causes less people to post questions.

I like the way that works in the groups as some things warrant long discussion or others are long running games so don't change that. The volume of posters is much lower and things don't tend to get stuck as much.

Lastly I do agree with SSS above that there should be an ignore poster option. Much like you have in chat or blogs where their posts just don't show up to you. It seems ignorance is the only way to deal with this troll as getting rid of him for good is impossible. At least this way many people wont have to read his vitrolic attacks on people.

Regardless of what you call them, those "Active Blogs" etc. lists are still promotions for a popularity contest. It shouldn't be about popularity. Good blogs are often overlooked, and new blogs are often discouraged because people tend to go to the "Most Popular" ones. The "Popular" people are then considered to be so special that others tend to feel inferior, or not welcome. It's like some kind of exclusive club for the elite, and not a public place for anyone who wants to be here. Get rid of the lists. They seem to serve no useful function other than to stroke some people's egos while intimidating the others who, by the way, are in the majority. The extra space gained could be used to keep entire individual watch lists displayed on the "front page" or use more space for random cycling of more blogger photos. Another section could be used to show recent posts according to certain categories; stories, advice, poetry, etc.

YES! WE ALL DO AGREE WITH SSS on her ideas! The sooner, THE BETTER...PLEASE!

Oh!!..How about NOT sending a "standard reply" email response when a member has to contact the abuse dept. or any other department for any "troubles/concerns" that the member might have.?? Each individual member here needs some viable assurance to make sure their concerns/complaints are being handled directly and have them all taken care of PROMPTLY. By the site sending the standard emails for responses as their answer just is NOT cutting it! The site has lost many members (long time, paying AND non paying) members and still alot more who are on the brink of leaving too.- ALL mainly due to the above requests!,and this one. Thank you!

Andrew replies on 7/9/2006 11:26 pm:
Interesting - I didn't know that they were sending out
a "canned" email for these types of emails. Can you
forward one to me?

Another one...
When I block someone, adjust the site as to where the member I blocked CANNOT see any activity I do on here at all! NOTHING! Its been discussed with other members also. Not just me.
Right now, I have blocked people and they can still do everything else except send winks and/or emails. WHOO~HOO! Thats not enough. Blocked means BLOCKED! That should mean, that certain member I block cannot see NOTHING of me or any of my activity. Thank ya again!

Andrew replies on 7/9/2006 11:27 pm:
Ah, for example, the can't view your profile if you block them?

By the way, we dont work for the site...so, by giving you all our ideas, do we get a piece of the pie? haha...just kidding! We seem to be doing more than the staff does!

Well, its true.(hehe)

I think SexySensualSane suggestion of a "Ignore feature" would be great to have in the magazine sections; however, in a large community of active members it can have it draw backs too by an offensive member spreading rumors and lies about another member on the boards for other members to read and judge another member by. Normally it takes the offended member that is mentioned in a posting to file a complaint with the abuse team against a member to having the abuse team to doing anything about it; unfortunately there are many times the abuse team does not handle the situation. For instance I have already reported a member that posted here in another topic Ideas to combat profile fraud (last posting in it) with placing my photo along with another member and Andrews, I do not appreciate the insinuations and accusations of that posting with my photo attached in it as saying I am a "brown noser". I do not kiss anyone's ass and I mean not anyone's ass. I find it as a form of defamation of character and leaves members to make false judgment of members by reading a posting like that one; consequently, postings as that one tend to causes conflicts amongst active members on this site and disturbances. Anyways, we all have assholes; therefore, we all have opinions too.

Groups One thing I would like to see is that voting's in groups can be disabled by the moderator as it is done in the Blogs and possibly a way the group chat room can be turned off by the moderator of a group. Some members become offended by others voting on them. The reason is that voting's can be used as a tool of abuse by another member towards another member\members; it is a psychological weapon used against a member\members at times which I have seen many times used as forcing a member\members to losing their temper or leaving a group, in addition it can cause an entire group disturbances and lead to the activity in a group to decrease. Majority of Moderators want their groups to be a friendly enjoyable active area of the site for members to meet and have conversations; yet certain features such as the voting in groups can be a monkey wrench in a smooth operating group. Since adding the "Poll" to the groups, I see no reasons that groups need a voting feature, since the majority of groups I been member of or looked inside do not use it or even want it.

  • "enable group moderators to specify how many days a post is "stuck" to the top of the list" This would be quite beneficial for many moderators of groups

  • "enable blog owners and group moderators to limit posters to people in their friends list"

I have not heard this idea brought up by any member in the past for being added to groups, would be interesting to hear more thoughts on this one.

  • "list new and recently visited members in a group"

I have mixed emotions on this one, some members may think or believe they are being followed around the site by another member and it might cause a conflict with some members of groups; on the other hand, it can also help put a stop on some of it too. Catch22

The Magazine\Advice Lines I much preferred the older format of posting orders from newer posting at top to older postings on bottom. The new format tends to drown out new articles or new questions being asked in those forums from being seen and read or replied to because some members are holding conversations in them (a lot times not even based on the topic posted). It works great in the groups because of being more a discussion and conversation forum for a "group of members" to meet in, but in my opinion the Magazine Section and Advice Lines are not Groups and are for members to give feedback to the author of the topic that was posted and not meant to being a "meeting place" for members to hold conversations in those postings. I really believe some of the old programming designs of the Magazine Sections Format from 2 years ago were far more better then what it is now ; the only thing the majority members were not happy with back then was the posting lags (delays), they just wanted a little more speed for their replies to being seen and read.

Well, I can think of one bug-fix that would add more interaction on the site but it has nothing to do with blogs, groups,or advice lines...lol. Keep members profiles from being deleted from the site. Mine has been deleted 3 times in one week.

"Better way to identify 'good' blogs..."

Is it necessary to really identify them? The readers will decide-- if they like it, they'll keep reading it; if not, the writer will get the hint.

      Quoting  :

I agree with Trilogy and NTTsilsuconus comments.

I noticed some of the "popular" bloggers do things they would not do if there was no list.

For example, one of them goes around welcoming new bloggers and refers them to her blog. She is not really welcoming them. She is advertising. I doubt she would do this if there was NO list.

Many of the "popular" bloggers stay there because many members keep them there by using the "popular" blogs to advertise themselves. Unless they have write something really good, I stay away.

I agree with SSS regarding the ignore poster option. I mentioned that in the Rants and Raves a year ago as a joke. I never thought someone else would come up with that idea.

I would prefer the old way of questions showing up in the Advice Lines section of the magazine. I agree with Sexyeyes.

It has been asked in the past, but the lists on the Group home page should be abolished, specifically the MOST ACTIVE GROUP MEMBERS list. Recently, three more people got carried away with posting and admitted it was to be '1, 2, 3' on that list. It is sad that some middle aged people have such empty lives that posting a lot of nonsense is a big accomplishment. Get rid of it please.

All the stuff you're working on sounds good. And I really like the "MegaBlock" function that people are talking about. To me the major problem with the site, however, is the speed. I know it's a huge networking proposition, and I know you're dependent to some extent on the Internet, but TSmeet is often a lot slower than it should be. Two things are tied for a close second, the "review" process and the fake users. The review process tends to run slowly. Is it really necessary to review every blog entry? Why not wait for a complaint and then review? Seems to me that would lower the workload and allow for more scrutiny of new accounts, thus addressing that other issue.

We like the site. This is our second go-round here. We were on in the late nineties for about a year and had no complaints, IIRC. Left to have a couple of kids and just returned in November. It's a good idea, and I'm sure it's a moneymaker. Addressing these issues would take it a good bit farther!

Thanks for your work, and thanks for caring.

luvpump, no the didnt tell me why it was happening. I figured I just got kicked out for some technical reason. whatever it is it happens after I have already logged in and i can always tell cause if I pull up a profile all of a sudden it says 'cant read member info'. So I try to log back in again and it wont let me. last night it happened when I clicked on a link to visit my group chat room and I was suddenly logged out and couldnt log back in. I have been in that chat room before and never had a problem though. the other nights that it happened I hadnt even been in there...

I think the "Block-Me-From-Seeing-This-Jerk's-Posts" proposition is a good idea. It should be set up so that if I don't want to ever see posts made by "So-n-So," then when I select that feature, I should see nothing coming from "So-n-So's" IP address. This is because as people said: The neighborhood asswipes set up multiple profiles simply to come on here and harrass others.

A comment I have is regarding pics and the screening of pics... I have seen profiles of members who say they are in the United States, are under 21-years-of-age, yet they have posted pics of themselves drinking alcohol. I have also seen pics of (and comments by) members whom I really question as to whether they are truly over 18. I think a good portion of harrassment on this site may be coming from bored adolescents who are posing as someone they are not- and looking to amuse themselves by being annoying. Perhaps ID verification may have to be mandatory?

I used to post in the Advice Lines alot, but quit because I got sick of all the tripe that kept getting posted: Flame wars, non-serious questions, hate, bigotry, racism, advertising, etc... It got old very fast.

One thing that I have noticed is that when you click on a topic to join a group, the list of groups and how many posts it has has not updated in over a month. For example, if you click on the breast fetish category you will see my group 'big tit lovers' there and it still says that it has 697 members and 9,102 posts the amount of members is correct (697 active members that is) but the amount of posts has stayed the same for over a month now. I like to know how many posts my group has mainly to see how many per day on average that we get, so I can see if the activity is speeding up or slowing down; and plus I have new groups too, so it would be nice if it updated so that when we get enough posts it will show up under that list and get noticed. as it stands now, people have to click on view all to even be able to see it. which leads me to another idea....have a list for new groups on the main page of groups, this way the newer groups can get seen and noticed.

bud, there is already a way for you to indicate what type of friends that person is in your friends list. Ex: cyber only, or general etc..there is a whole list of them...

I'm sure you know blocking users by IP address is not really an option since the majority of users are on dynamic IP addresses. More likely will not block the one you want to block and block those you don't want to.

I would ask for the addition of a second group moderator, like an associate group moderator. In one of my groups, the moderator was replace by someone else. Our original moderator gave his username and password to another trusted member who would delete posts when they violated the group rules. It would be nice if there wasn't a work around but that this other individual had the rights to remove the posts.

    Thanks!

have a way for moderator to hand off a group - but might

Andrew I do things on this site for all to see that it actually is possible instead of whining and crying to who ever is the chief wha wha baby. And that's what the post your1 dream lover is mentioning. I chose those photos because all three of you are the biggest liars on a.f.f. you have this blog trying to sugar coat all your sites flaws while you do nothing about them ripping off your members. Techsteve has gone from one end of a.ff to the other stick his nose in everyones business and stirring up shit everywhere. I myself and my wife have reported him many times to no avail simply because your staff and yourself simply don't care as you would like to have people believe. and dear sweet nicky poo. ever since I first heard of this guy he goes around talking about some dumbass dragon in him and how controversial he thinks he is. He posts here trying to make himself look good to you when everywhere else he posts he cuts this site to ribbons and blames you and your staff and members of this site he don't like for every lil glitch he experiences. So see I'm not the only mother fucker on this site. And all four of us aren't the only ones either. The difference between all four of us is I'm not afraid to stand up when my name is called. I've been banned from this site more times than I can remember and I don't give a shit how many times will come. The folks I inter act with here accept who I am and we get along fine... not everyone will be friends or friendly. And that's what you all can't handle if people aren't kissing your asses 24/7 you do what you can to drive them away. So I for one see straight through all your alls holier than thou bullshit and spit it right back in your face. Here you go nick report this as well.
